ASSESSMENT & REFERRAL
Screening,
Brief Intervention and Referral for Treatment (SBIRT)
is a public health approach
that can help health care and other professionals determine whether
someone uses alcohol and/or drugs in unhealthy ways.
Research shows that health care providers
can engage patients in non-judgmental conversations (brief interventions)
about their substance use and can help them decide whether they
should reduce their use to improve their long-term health.
Through a collaboration with CAReS
and health care providers, early intervention services will be
available to risky drinkers such as those who binge drink, drink
and drive, drink at work or drink at levels harmful to their health.

Substance Abuse Professional Services
A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)
is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a Department
of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol regulation and makes
recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing,
and aftercare.
The SAP has met qualification requirements,
receives ongoing training in DOT policy and procedure, and has
successfully completed an SAP examination. The role of the SAP
is to play the "Gatekeeper" for DOT's return-to-duty
process. The SAP is not an advocate for the employee or the employer,
but rather for public safety.
The Council on Addiction Recovery
Services, Inc. employs Dee Dee Bartz, CASAC, SAP, who provides
DOT services in the Olean office. She can be contacted at 716-373-5202
ext. 519 or at dbartz@councilonaddiction.org.
